About Us
Area S was formed in the spring of 2002 and consists of AYSO Regions 46 (Saugus), 677 (Canyon Country), 678 (Valencia-Newhall), and 1441(Castaic). Regions 46, 677, and 678 had been part of Area C which included all of the Regions of the San Fernando Valley and Burbank. In the spring of 2002, spurred by growth in the Santa Clarita Valley, Area C was split into V (San Fernando Valley) and S (Santa Clarita Valley). The Castaic Region was created as a pilot region within 678 at that time and became a charter region in 2004.
The Region numbers give a good indication of when the Region was formed. Saugus (Region 46) is one of the older regions in AYSO, having been formed in the late '70's. At that time it serviced all of the Santa Clarita Valley. In approximately 1989, Region 46 had approximately 2000 players and was split into three regions: 46, 677, and 678 each with a population of slightly under 700 players. Since 1989, each of these Regions has grown tremendously with current player populations in excess of 2000 players each for Regions 46 and 678 and over 1200 players for Region 677. The Area's newest Region, Castaic (1441) has grown from approximately 350 players its first year to nearly 600 players in 2005. Valley-wide we now have approximately 6000 kids playing soccer with AYSO.
Area S is governed by an Area Board. The Area has a Director, Mark Hovis, a CVPA, Secretary, Treasurer, Area Coach Administrator, Area Referee Administrator, Coach and Referee training and instruction personnel, and, of course, the Regional Commisioners of each of the member regions. The Board meets monthly, usually the last Monday of each month.
Area S is a member of Section 10 of the American Youth Soccer Organization. Section 10 is one of 14 member Sections of the organization which provides soccer to nearly 600,000 kids nationwide! Section 10's geographic boundaries cover the San Fernando Valley north to Paso Robles, west to the Pacific Ocean, and east through Palmdale and Lancaster, and Bakersfield. There are approximately 65,000 players within the Section.
Section 10 reports to the Board of Directors of AYSO. Visit www.soccer.org for more information on the National Office.
